The Full Story
In August 2005 the Little River County Historical Society purchased the building on the corner of Constitution Ave. (Hwy.71) and Main St. to house the present Two Rivers Museum. The name "Two Rivers" was chosen because of the proximity of Ashdown between the Red River on the south side and the Little River on the north side. Various grants, donations and fundraisers allowed renovations to begin. The first major exhibit was the 100+ framed pictures of "The First 100 Years of Ashdown Commerce." In June 2005 the museum was host to an overflowing crowd at its open house with an exhibit called "Freedom's Heroes." This military exhibit won first place for museums with budgets under $100,000 at the 2006 Arkansas Museum Assoc. State Convention. The next exhibit in September-October 2006 was "Things With Which We Labored", which showcased an old school room, kitchen, washday with an old wash pot, sewing machine, ironing board with a flat iron, and other items with which our forefathers labored. Tools used by different craftsmen in the area of mechanics, farming, blacksmithing, railroad construction, timber, sawmilling, and carpentry were also on display. Over the years the museum has grown such that some of these professions now have their own room. We will highlight those later.
Christmas 2006 featured a 'Land O' Toys' exhibit which featured trees adorned with toys and decorations specific to each decade of time from 1900-2000. Again, this was a very popular event. We now exhibit through the month of December the annual "Land of Trees".
The museum was semi-closed and major renovations were started in 2006. The two rooms downstairs are nearly full with several very nice exhibits, plus there are restroom facilities and an office. The kitchen area is located at the south end of the east side of the museum. Future plans include restoration of the upstairs for additional exhibit space.
The South Wing was added later to the museum. This wing includes the Animal Room, Railroad Room, Tool Room and Blacksmith Room and an old Kitchen. In addition there is a small garden between the museum and the adjoining building.
