Step back in time to a typical turn-of-the-century kitchen, where family life and daily routines revolved around cooking, warmth, and the heart of the home. The centerpiece of this kitchen is the beautiful fireplace, which served multiple purposes: not only was it used for cooking and heating, but it also acted as the hub for countless household tasks. From baking bread to boiling water, the fireplace was central to life in the early 20th century kitchen.

Many of the early cooking utensils and items on display were generously donated by local citizens, offering a glimpse into the past and the tools used by families to prepare meals from scratch. These items—such as cast-iron skillets, wooden spoons, and vintage pans—reflect the ingenuity and resourcefulness of those who lived in this era.

The Jewell gas stove, a top-of-the-line appliance from the 1940s, is an iconic example of mid-century technology and modern convenience. A far cry from the open hearth, the Jewell stove revolutionized the kitchen by offering precise temperature control and efficiency for busy home cooks. It was a coveted feature in homes during the post-war era, reflecting the growing move toward innovation and industrialization.

The cabinet, typical of the 1930s, features a flour bin and a sifter, essential items in any kitchen at the time. These storage solutions helped keep ingredients fresh and organized for everyday cooking, while the sifter ensured that flour was smooth and ready for baking. The kitchen cabinetry from this era was designed to be both functional and practical, often with built-in spaces for storing essentials, making it an integral part of the home.

This exhibit invites you to explore the tools, appliances, and history of the kitchen, a place that was, and still is, central to family life, nourishment, and tradition.
