Henry Kaufman and the Legacy of Kaufman Seeds
Updated: Nov 20, 2024
Henry Kaufman’s journey from an immigrant fleeing war-torn Europe to the founder of Kaufman Seeds in Ashdown, Arkansas, is a testament to resilience, hard work, and unwavering integrity. Born in Germany in 1906, Kaufman’s early life was marked by tragedy when his father was lost in World War I. His education in languages and business would set him on a path that would take him from Italy to the U.S. and, eventually, to Ashdown, where he established Kaufman Seeds in 1943.
A driven and meticulous businessman, Kaufman’s legacy was shaped by his dedication to his family, his employees, and his work. Despite the challenges of life in a small town, Kaufman made an indelible mark on both his community and the international seed industry. He was a beloved figure at his company, where his employees, many of whom worked alongside him for decades, were treated like family.
Kaufman’s work ethic and honesty were legendary, earning the respect of peers and competitors alike. His international business ventures brought Kaufman Seeds to Australia, Japan, and beyond, and his innovations—including the first air-conditioned seed warehouse in the U.S.—cemented his reputation as a forward-thinking businessman. Yet, despite his professional success, it was his personal touch that resonated most with those who knew him: a man who never met a stranger and who took pride in making those around him feel valued.
The chair featured in this exhibit once belonged to Mr. Henry Kaufman and was used by him in his office at Kaufman Seeds. This simple yet enduring piece of furniture symbolizes the countless hours he spent managing the business and shaping the future of Kaufman Seeds. It stands as a reminder of his dedication to his work, his community, and his family, and is a cherished artifact of the legacy he left behind.
Henry Kaufman passed away in 1997, but his legacy endures through Kaufman Seeds, which continued under the leadership of his right-hand man, John Hearn. As Kaufman Seeds closes its doors after 68 years, we remember the impact of a man who built a thriving business from the ground up with hard work, integrity, and an unshakable love for his family and his work.
This exhibit celebrates his life and contributions, not just to the seed industry, but to the community and the family he cherished.
